Dear Leader – Don’t Help Me Do, Help Me Be

Over the years I’ve discovered two types of leaders. Maybe you’ll recognize these two types of leaders and see yourself in one roll or the other. I can say that, at one time, I have fallen into one category of leader but now I feel that I’m in the other type of leader.

So, what are the two types of leaders? Are you a leader that helps people do or are you a leader that helps people be?

Let me explain. A leader that helps people do is focused on the tactical, the transactional. It’s about getting things done. Here is how you do it. Here is how you get more of it done. Here is how …

You get the picture. This leader is all about the results. Get it done! Now! Sooner! Faster! Most of the time the leader wants you to get it done because it’s being done for THEM.

Then there is the leader who is focused on you. This leader wants you to BE the best you can be – not because the leader sees that as a road to their success but rather the road to your growth…to achieving your fullest potential.

To be the kind of leader that helps their people to be their best, here are six things to think about:

  1. Identify individual strengths and development needs: A leader should take the time to understand each employee’s unique strengths and development needs. By doing this, they can personalize their approach to coaching and development, which will help employees grow and feel valued.
  2. Create a supportive environment: Leaders should create an environment that fosters growth. This can be achieved by providing opportunities for training, giving employees challenging assignments, and recognizing and rewarding their achievements.
  3. Communicate effectively: Communication is key to showing employees that you care about them. Leaders should listen actively to their employees’ concerns and ideas, provide clear expectations and feedback, and be approachable and available for discussion.
  4. Provide mentorship and coaching: Leaders should act as mentors and coaches, providing guidance and support to help their employees develop their skills and abilities.
  5. Encourage collaboration and teamwork: Collaboration and teamwork are essential for growth and development. Leaders should encourage collaboration and provide opportunities for employees to work together on projects and initiatives.
  6. Recognize and reward achievements: Leaders should recognize and reward employees for their achievements and contributions. This can be done through verbal recognition, bonuses, promotions, or other incentives.

When a leader is truly there for you, wants you to be your very best, they are committed on a different level to you, and you become committed to them on a deeper level. This relationship builds accountability both in the leader and the individual. Everyone becomes their best. And, in the end the organization grows to become it’s very best.
